Long story short, my tenants (who live in my old house) had a small leak coming from their faucet. Rather than replace the cartridge inside, I decided to just get them a new faucet ($100-$150). They mentioned maybe replacing the sink, too, which was definitely getting old. Being a good landlord, I agreed completely and decided to go with professional installation because sinks can be a PITA. We paid Lowe’s to do professional measurements up front, then the entire process was delayed and mishandled, requiring about 10 phone call on my part. I bought a $270 combo sink/faucet kit. Today when they arrive for installation, the plumber tells me that due to the sink’s built in brackets, I need $330 of additional cutting to my countertops, which thankfully are just laminate and not anything more serious. I’m up to almost $900 of parts and labor on a pretty simple drop-in sink/faucet installation now. Would it be reasonable to write the whole thing up and request that Lowe’s cover that extra labor? We paid for their measurements for a reason, and this was the reason. They did not give me any guidance on sink choice except for overall dimensions. I’m trying not to be irate, but I’ve already been through so much hassle with them, this put me over the edge...sorry for lack of paragraphs. KINJA! ( EDIT: I just talked to the Lowe’s install desk and they said either Lowe’s or the plumber should cover this...as I suspected, the pre-measurement should have prevented this from happening. Fingers crossed... )

So the Lowe’s job was part of the current project? Did they subcontract the plumber?

knowing lowes just raise a huge stink about this, because A:the worst they can say is no B:They bend over backwards for pissed off customers and C: Big box stores are awful. Blowes is run by a bunch of people who pinch pennies at the expense of customers, employees, and general good business practices.

Blame Lowes, and try to get them to cover it or at least refund the cost of the measurements. If all else fails write about it on here, link it to a tweet. Try to be a general pain in the ass until they give you some money.

Yes, all professional install services at the Big Box stores are technically subcontractors, but those subs are often exclusive to the store, so it’s a tigh relationship. Lowe’s “owns” the work. I already have a couple of good plumbers I like, but I wanted the smoothest possible transaction and to specifically avoid what just happened...

Yeah, I’ll just pull the whole “I spent $5k+ per year there...extremely disappointed...wish I had used Home Depot...etc.” If there’s anything I still carry from my angry young man days, it’s how to very professionally express my anger in writing :D

I'm hoping for more than the $35 measurement fee :D — but since the $329 of extra labor was a direct result of those measurements' not actually being used to help me buy a sink, I might have some traction.

Not that home depot is any better lol. I am rapidly learning how unprofessional large retail outlets are. But hey, stock price, investors, blah blah blah.

I'm 110% in favor of local businesses and plumbers...this was just a case where I was trying to project some extra professionalism and familiarity to my tenants (I could have DIY'd most of it). Lesson learned!
